Biography
Terry Shimp earned his doctorate degree in marketing from theUniversity of Maryland in
1974. He retired from active teaching in 2006 but remains active in research, writing, and
working with Ph.D. students. Terry received a number of research and teaching awards
during his career. These include the American Academy of Advertising's lifetime achievement award
for advertising research in 2000, the Association for Consumer Research's award for the best
article published in the
Journal of Consumer Research between 1991-1993, the
Journal of Advertising's award for the best article published in 1998, and the University
of South Carolina university-wide Amoco outstanding teacher award (1990) that is presented annually
to one faculty member. He received many other teaching awards for his undergraduate and
graduate teaching. He was elected Fellow of the Society of Consumer Psychology in 2003.
His primary areas of research are the study of consumer learning, persuasion, and response to
marketing and advertising communications. He has been a frequent contributor to the discipline's
top journals with many publications in the
Journal of Consumer Research,
Journal of Marketing Research,
Journal of Marketing,
Journal of Consumer Psychology,
Journal of Advertising Research,
Journal of Advertising, and elsewhere. He has presented numerous papers at national
conferences of the Association for Consumer Research and the American Marketing Association. He
also is author of Advertising, Promotion, and Supplemental Aspects of Integrated Marketing
Communications (Thomson/South-Western, 7th. ed., 2007).
Terry is a past president of the Association for Consumer Research (1993) and past president
(two terms) of the
Journal of Consumer Research policy board. For many years he served on the
editorial review boards of the
Journal of Consumer Research,
Journal of Consumer Psychology,
Journal of Marketing,
Journal of Public Policy and Marketing,
Marketing Letters,
Psychology & Marketing, and
Marketing Communications. He has received outstanding reviewer awards from the
Journal of Marketing and the
Journal of Consumer Research on multiple occasions.
Terry is married (Judy) and the father of a son
(John), a daughter (Julie), and grandfather to five grandsons (Aubrey, Henry, Ethan, Parker, and
Spencer).
