Biography

Daniel C. Steele is an Associate Professor in the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. Coming from an industrial background, his activities and interests include manufacturing strategy, manufacturing planning and control systems, theory of constraints, and supply chain management. Professor Steele completed his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in operations management in 1992 and earlier BS Electrical Engineering and MS Industrial Administration degrees from Purdue University. His industrial experience spans 15 years in materials and line production management positions for electronic assembly, mechanical fabrication, and automotive supplier operations.

Professor Steele teaches courses in operations management, production and inventory management systems, supply chain management, and manufacturing strategy. His current research concerns manufacturing planning and control system design, comparisons of alternative planning systems, and applications of the theory of constraints. He has published in Decision Sciences, International Journal of Production Research, International Journal of Operations and Production Management, Production and Inventory Management Journal, and others. He currently serves on the University Senate, the school Faculty Advisory Committee, and the Undergraduate Programs Executive Committee and is on the Editorial Review Board for the Journal of Operations Management. He is also co-chair for the Production Operations Track of the 2001 national meeting of the Decision Sciences Institute. He is a member of Decision Sciences Institute, the Production and Operations Management Society, the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences, and the American Production and Inventory Control Society. He is certified as a fellow by APICS and was awarded the Romey Everdell award for best paper in Production and Inventory Management Journal in 1996. He recently served on the national APICS certification committee for the “Basics of Supply Chain Management.” He has also been designated a “Jonah” through the Goldratt Institute program on the theory of constraints.
