The Center for Business Communication (CBC) is a facility for the teaching and study of written, spoken, and visual communication in the workplace. Located in the Management Department of the Moore School of Business, the CBC serves the entire Moore School community of students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Among the services provided are private consultations with individuals and groups; in-class workshops on communication topics; faculty support in developing and grading assignments involving communication; and language learning support for non-native speakers of English. The CBC was founded in 1997 when research conducted among business leaders confirmed that communication skills not only rank among the most desirable qualities looked for in new employees, but also contribute significantly to continued career success. As one of the first educational initiatives of its kind, the Moore School’s Center for Business Communication serves as a model for other business schools in the United States and abroad.
The CBC provides free consultations to individuals and work teams on any kind of communication project at any stage of its development. Students interested in improving their performance on course assignments come for help on researching and organizing material, writing, revising, editing, rehearsing, or simply getting started on a project. Other clients come for help with business plans, job application cover letters, essays for graduate school applications, or personal statements. Work teams come for guidance in preparing collaborative presentations and reports. Faculty and instructors come for assistance with journal articles, tenure and promotion materials, or designing and evaluating assignments that require communication skills. Moore School staff and alumni come for help with special projects such as oral presentations, employee manuals, or proposals.
The CBC offers seven in-class workshops to help develop critical communication skills. Faculty and instructors who want to help students improve their performance on writing assignments, oral presentations, visual aids, or team projects can call CBC director, Martha Thomas, to schedule one or more of the workshops listed below. Workshop sessions are typically 75 minutes long, but can be adapted to other time formats. Custom workshops can also be developed to faculty specifications.
For members of the Moore School community who speak English as a second language, the CBC has consultants trained in linguistics to help with writing and speaking North American English. Clients seeking to improve their language skills or learn about U.S. cultures can use these services on a project-by-project basis, or make a standing appointment for the ongoing development of their ability to communicate in English.
The Center for Business Communication employs consultants skilled in language and communication as well as second language acquisition. The consultants are graduate students from the USC Department of Linguistics and the Moore School of Business. Those from the Department of Linguistics (the science of language) have work experience in communication and language learning, and those from the Moore School have language skills in addition to their business experience.
The Center for Business Communication is located in room 787 of the Moore School of Business and is open Monday through Friday year-round. Hours of operation may vary from semester to semester, so check the CBC contact page for current opening and closing times.
Consulting sessions are 55 minutes long and begin on the hour. While you are always welcome to drop by during office hours, we encourage you to call ahead for an appointment to ensure that a consultant will be available at the time you prefer. If you are unable to keep an appointment, please let the CBC know so that the time can be used for another client.
