Moore Japanese Track

The Moore School of Business offers a 29-34 month Japanese Track option. The course of study for the Japanese specialization consists of five phases:

Phase I

Year 1: July through December in Columbia
Core Business Curriculum

Japanese Track students start their program in early July on the USC campus, joining students from other tracks to begin the first-year International MBA business management curriculum. This constitutes the internationalized core courses covering leadership, globalization, entrepreneurship, economics, accounting, quantitative methods, finance, management, marketing, information technology and operations management.

Phase II

Year 1: January & February in Columbia
Language, Regional and Global Business Issues Classes

Asian Language Track students undertake their language studies and join other students in a series of elective courses aligned with their geographic and functional interests, including courses offered on regional business issues related to East Asia, China, India and Japan. Each regional course is taught by a different professor. All are specialists in the region. Other regional issues courses not taken during Phase II may be taken in the second IMBA year (Phase V) as electives.

Phase III

Year 2: April - February of the following year in Asia
Overseas Intensive Japanese Language Study

Students then attend two semesters of additional Japanese language and cultural courses at Waseda University . Emphasis in the coursework is placed on reading and writing Japanese. These two semesters of study at Waseda allow students in the Japanese track to travel or undertake additional study during breaks between academic terms.

Phase IV

Year 2: March - August in Asia
Internship

During this period of time, students undertake a six-month internship with a company located in Japan , either a Japanese-owned company or a multinational organization.

Phase V

Year 3: August - May of the following year in Columbia
Elective and Concentration Coursework

Upon completion of the internship, students return to USC to focus on their business concentration courses during fall and spring semesters, at which time they also initiate a fulltime job search.  For their final two semesters, students enroll at USC in Columbia for 21 credit hours of electives to obtain a business concentration. Depending on the number of elective credit hours taken in Phase II, it may be possible for students to complete their coursework in December 2008. Students may opt to take one semester at a business school where Moore has established an IMBA exchange agreement.  For a current list of these schools, see Moore’s Business School Exchange Programs.
