Brief job history: Prior to coming to the Moore School, I spent three years in El Salvador as a Peace Corps volunteer, so finding an MBA program that had an emphasis on economic development was very important to me.
Why I chose IMBA: I chose the Moore program for several reasons. First, the program is one of the most internationally focused MBA programs in the nation, and with the relatively low cost of living in South Carolina, Moore can’t be beat! I also really wanted to learn another language. The intensive language training program thoroughly prepared me for getting around in the work environment and in many other cultural situations abroad.
Where I interned: I interned with the American Chamber of Commerce in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, and without the prior language training offered at Moore, I would not have felt as much a part of the work team or as integrated in the culture as I did.
What impacted me the most during the IMBA Program: One of the things that added the most value to my experience as a student was being involved in extra-curricular activities such as the Moore chapter of the Net Impact club, and during my second year I served as the club’s president. The mission of Net Impact, an international nonprofit organization, is to make a positive impact on society by growing and strengthening a community of new leaders who use business to improve the world. Members are current and emerging leaders in corporate social responsibility, social entrepreneurship, nonprofit management, international development, and environmental sustainability who are actively improving the world. I gained tremendously by being a part of Net Impact, and I plan to stay involved throughout my career.
How IMBA has added value to my career: During my second year at Moore, it
was very important to me to be able to tailor my learning experience and gain practical knowledge
of economic development and microfinance. I was able to choose courses that stress
issues of development, sustainability, and social responsibility within a business context. I
attribute my success in landing a challenging and rewarding position to my Moore School
business education and my prior experiences.
